With an academic background in criminology and sociology, Ava Balfour is working towards her business degree at the University of Denver. Committed to helping others, Ava Balfour supports organizations such as Rockies Service for Sight and the Food Bank of the Rockies.
As reported by CBS Local, the latter nonprofit is stepping up to take an integral role in ensuring that individuals and families do not go hungry as the coronavirus pandemic stresses systems. The CEO of the Food Bank pointed to school closures creating tough decisions for many wage earners as to whether to stay home and take care of the kids, or go out and earn money for groceries.
With the Food Bank serving as a distribution and warehousing center that sends out food to 700 pantries spanning Colorado and Wyoming, 500,000 people are fed on an annual basis. The expectation is that there will be a dramatic increase in this figure in 2020. At the same time, quantities of food received from donation partners such as King Soopers are declining, as shoppers scour shelves.
Food Bank of the Rockies is actively working to increase its donation and contribution levels, to ensure that the impact of a serious public health situation is minimized.
